Executive summary

The EMBRIO International Symposium (EIS) is a biennial flagship event held every odd year by RCoE EMBRIO FPIK IPB to disseminate multidisciplinary scientific research results and promote innovative solutions for the sustainability of Indonesia’s marine biodiversity. At the same time, EIS serves as an institutional platform to strengthen IPB’s strategic network with national and international partners for cross-sectoral programs, while increasing academic outreach through collaboration, presentation of ideas and research results, and publication in reputable international journals and proceedings.

The 6th EMBRIO International Symposium (EIS), planned to take place on November 6-7, 2023, embodies EMBRIO’s mission: Understanding, Protecting, Rehabilitating & Sustainable Use of Indonesia’s Marine Biodiversity for Future Human Well-Being. The 6th EIS will be conducted in Hybrid mode, with offline sessions at the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences IPB and online sessions through Zoom Cloud Meetings. This collaborative event is a partnership between EMBRIO IPB and international partners, including the Maizuru Fisheries Research Station at Kyoto University (Japan), the Institute for Ocean and Fisheries at the University of British Columbia (UBC), and national partners such as the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Kemenko Marves), Indonesian Ichthyology Society (MII), Indonesian Water Products Processing Society (MPHPI), BIONESIA (Indonesian Biodiversity), and PKSPL-LPPM IPB.

The 2022 G20 Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group (ECSWG) has given top priority to ocean health and sustainable fisheries. Building upon the G20’s focus, the 6th EMBRIO International Symposium (EIS) has chosen the theme “Ocean for Prosperity: Sustainably using ocean resources for economic growth, improving livelihoods, and preserving ocean ecosystem health.” The objectives of the 6th EIS in 2023 are as follows: (1) provide a platform for knowledge transfer and idea exchange, (2) foster research collaborations with national and international researchers, (3) identify knowledge gaps and prioritize research areas within the scope of Marine Biodiversity, Utilization, Conservation, and Management, (4) train young scientists and environmental practitioners, and (5) seek expert advice on practical issues related to tropical marine biodiversity conservation and fisheries management.

Background

Indonesia officially holds the Presidency of the Group of Twenty (G20) for a year, starting from December 1, 2021, until the G20 Summit in November 2022. The G20 Presidency carries the theme “Recover Together, Recover Stronger.” This theme encourages the world to work together in recovering stronger and continue sustainable development after being hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. Under Indonesia’s Presidency, the Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group (ECSWG) will focus on sustainable recovery, both on land and at sea, as well as resource mobilization to support environmental protection, climate change mitigation and adaptation. Central issues discussed include biodiversity, particularly initiatives to develop the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, environmental restoration, marine ecosystem protection, IUU Fishing, marine protected areas in Antarctica, Osaka Blue Ocean Vision, marine waste, resource efficiency, and circular economy.

Ocean health and sustainable fisheries are the main focus of the maritime sector within the Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group (ECSWG) of the G20. Blue economy policies that prioritize the well-being of the people through the management and utilization of the ocean, considering both ecological resilience and economic resilience, are fundamental and urgent matters to be pursued. These blue economy policies align with the priority programs of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries for ocean management, such as coastal ecosystem rehabilitation, disaster mitigation, climate change adaptation, and conservation management. Ensuring food security based on marine biodiversity, sustainable aquaculture, and responsible fishing practices are appropriate policies for post-Covid-19 recovery efforts. This is in line with EMBRIO’s mission, which is to understand, protect, rehabilitate, and sustainably use Indonesia’s marine biodiversity for future human well-being.

Outcomes:

The audience will have an overview of ocean health and sustainable fisheries. The symposium will disseminate research results about marine biodiversity resource, fisheries, and marine science and it will provide opportunities to collaborate in research, developing science, both national and international scientific publication.

Outputs:

The output of this activity is the seminar proceedings which are published in Scopus indexed international publishers and Policy Briefs. Manuscripts of other research results that are seminarized can be directed to be published in national journals accredited with SINTA 2 rating, namely the Indonesian Ichthyology Journal, the Journal of Tropical Marine Science and Technology, and the Indonesian Journal of Processing of Aquatic Products.
